Welcome to the

Warheads to Windmills Campaign
Addressing the twin threats of nuclear weapons and the climate emergency!

The Double Threat of Nuclear Weapons and Climate Change

Nuclear weapons and climate change are two of the greatest threats facing the world. With nearly 14,000 nuclear weapons, nine nuclear-armed states possess the capacity to destroy humanity and devastate the environment through war. Climate change threatens all life and responding to it involves shifting priorities and resources away from militaries and war, toward just and sustainable peace.

Militarism and the Climate Emergency

The Pentagon is a major polluter. U.S. Militarism degrades the environment and contributes directly to climate change. The Pentagon is the world’s largest institutional user of petroleum; just one of the military’s jets, the B-52 Stratofortress, consumes about as much fuel in an hour as the average car driver uses in seven years. Plans to confront climate change must address militarization, but “greening the military” misses the point entirely. Militarism and climate justice are fundamentally at odds.

There are solutions --

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)

In 2022 an international treaty signed by over 95 countries

in the UN went into force that makes all nuclear weapons illegal.

The Nuclear armed countries have yet to sign,

The U.S. must lead the way.

And

The Proposed Treaty on Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation.

or the Fossil Fuel Treaty for short.

A bloc of nations-states are formally seeking to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

They have been supported by the World Health Organization,

the European Parliament and thousands of others.  Who will join them?

Finally, there is legislation in Congress to address these dual threats. H.R.2775, The Nuclear Weapons Abolition and Conversion Act of 2023 would direct the United States to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and convert nuclear weapons industries and personnel to purposes addressing the climate emergency.

There is also H. Res 77 in the House. This resolution embraces the goals and provisions of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This resolution calls on the President to make nuclear disarmament the centerpiece of U.S. national security policy. It also calls on the United States to lead a global effort to move the world back from the nuclear brink and to prevent nuclear war.

(Though there is no provision for re-investing in Climate Change mitigation as in the H.R.2775.)

Congress people can co-sponsor, and vote for both but our priority is H.R.2775
